Project Description
AirPure project aims to find a promising continuous carbon capture process from flue gas, in post-combustion capture approach, by studying two physical capture processes: crystallization of gas clathrates (HGtS) and through amine-based absorption (AGtL).
AirPure HGtS evaluates the technological and economic feasibility of a carbon capture process using clathrate hydrate crystallization. This environmentally friendly method selectively captures CO2 by mixing water under high pressure and low-temperature conditions.
Main Outcomes
Construction of a Continuous Prototype for the Production of Clathrate Hydrates: Prototype able to capture up to 1 kg/h of CO2 in the form of clathrate hydrates, in a unit with gas-liquid contact time of under 1 second, forming a slurry of solid hydrates.
Evaluation of Technology for Capture of CO2 from N2: Technological and economic assessment of the carbon capture process using continuous hydrate-based technology, highlighting its limited techno-economic feasibility.
Intellectual Property
European Patent: Patent focusing on the process of producing clathrate hydrates in continuous, and its application for carbon capture from post-combustion industrial point sources.
Continuous production of clathrate hydrates from aqueous and hydrate-forming streams, methods and uses thereof (WO2021137176A1).
